In aerial wildfire suppression, the Bird Dog aircraft acts as the eyes, ears, and coordination hub in the sky—guiding operations and ensuring every move counts. It’s aerial wildfire firefighting in action.
At FPL, our Bird Dog is crewed by a highly trained FPL pilot and a provincial Air Attack Officer (AAO). Together, they lead the charge in safely and strategically managing wildfire response from above.
What does the Bird Dog do?
Coordinates and directs airtanker drops
Assesses fire behaviour, fuel type, and terrain
Communicates with ground crews and aircraft in real time
Ensures each drop is precise, effective, and safe
While air tankers do the heavy lifting, the Bird Dog provides the leadership and strategy behind each mission. It’s not just about flying—it’s about turning a fleet of aircraft into an integrated suppression team.
This collaboration between FPL and government agencies is key to protecting communities, natural resources, and first responders when it matters most.
